VIDEO: Pedestrian/bike advocates to City: "Don't create a hellscape."

People spoke movingly about the death of 64-year old Mamawa Sima

During Monday's City Council meeting several people spoke movingly about the death of 64-year old Mamawa Simai, who was struck and killed by a car while crossing the street at the intersection of Elliot Avenue and South First Street, and the need for better pedestrian safety measures throughout the city.

"What we need to do now is choose to prioritize safety and accessibility and be willing to make the investments to correct decades of disinvestment," said Guinevere Higgins, vice chair of the City's Bike & Pedestrian Committee. "....we can choose to ensure that everyone on our streets is safe from traffic violence. We can choose to implement the plans that are ready to come off the shelf. We can choose to direct meaningful funding for safety and accessibility. Or we can choose to see more fatalities. If Mamawa Simai’s death won’t move us to act, what will?"

The driver, Matthew Kozub, 19, who reported the crash and stayed on scene was taken into custody on a separate charge.
