Census 2020: What the early numbers are telling us.
Charlottesville's Black population continues to decline in numbers and percentage, as does its white population (percentage-wise), but its multiracial population continues to grow.
2020 Census results were just released and there will be a lot to unpack. Meanwhile, some quick data points: Charlottesville's population grew by 3,078 since 2010, a 7.08% increase [2020 pop. 46,553]. Meanwhile, Albemarle County's population grew by 13,395 since 2010, a 13.56% increase [2020 pop. 112,395].
Charlottesville's Black population continues to decline in number and percentage, from 19% in 2010 to 15.3% in 2020. To put that into perspective, between 2000 and 2010 the Black population dropped by 561, but between 2010 and 2020 that figure more than doubled, dropping by 1,138. Meanwhile, Charlottesville’s white population continues to grow, 2,283 since 2000, but that growth slowed considerably between 2010 and 2020, adding just 355, whereas the white population grew by 1,928 between 2000 and 2010. In Albemarle County, however, the Black population by number increased from 9,600 in 2010 to 9,953 in 2020, while the percentage of Black people dropped from 9.70% to 8.9%.
